So I decided to invest in a graphics tablet, and after much research, I opted for an XP Pen Artist 12 3rd.
The model is fairly new and relatively inexpensive for this type of product (~€200). With good color gamut coverage, Full HD resolution, and high sensitivity with very little parallax, this graphics tablet seemed ideal for beginners. As a bonus, it features two scroll wheels and eight customizable shortcut buttons, and it also includes a stand and a glove to help your hand glide more smoothly. That said, it won’t miraculously improve my drawing skills—I’m not very good at it, as evidenced by this magnificent Godzilla created using the tablet in Affinity, the software recently acquired by Canva.
So I decided to start a new series of tutorials dedicated exclusively to 3D sculpting. I have a whole list of them, but I started with a video on face sculpting by Grant Abbit.
And after a solid hour, here’s the result:
Well, it’s still not great, and it doesn’t look anything like the model, but it was still more comfortable with the tablet, more intuitive. So I found this tutorial, which was long and comprehensive and allowed me to see the entire pipeline from modeling to animation. Let’s just say that each step was a challenge and a headache.
First of all, modeling with the mouse, knowing that I’m not very good at drawing, everything related to lips, fingers, or details in general was extremely difficult. The retopology afterwards, particularly on the hand, proved to be endless with the shrinkwrap, which moves the vertices anywhere, a nightmare.
By the way, I wanted to tackle the hair. So I looked for another character, the famous Astro-Bot from PlayStation Studios, and, as an innovation on the blog, here it is below in 3D. It’s not exactly the same as what I see in Blender, but it’s pretty close:
No major difficulties, except for displaying the sphere that serves as an antenna in a very fluorescent color, which unfortunately cannot be seen in the rendering above, but it is there.
Next step: rigging and animation.
Otherwise, I finished Invasion, which isn’t too bad, but I don’t understand why so many series end up falling into the same trap of wordy interactions and saccharine stories that don’t really develop the characters or relationships. For the ball, I used an empty to move the ball and the Transformation constraint to automate the ball’s rotation based on its position in the scene. In order to animate the lamp’s body from a single bone, the video recommended using the Inverse Kinematics constraint, and it worked pretty well, except that I couldn’t assign a Pole Target without completely destroying the main character. In any case, not wanting to spend much more time on this tutorial (which I started over a week ago), I was able to achieve the movements as best I could, with very unconvincing jumps and springs that behave strangely, not to mention the light and the image. It can also be observed that the lamp’s base often extends beyond the balloon or the ground.
The next day, I was able to refine everything, especially the lighting, add a bit of smoke, and do the compositing, for a much more satisfying result, even if the animation is far from perfect, and there are some glitches that I don’t understand.
Great tutorial, I was able to learn about rigging, animation, and the compositing tab, and I think I’ll continue with this theme, perhaps a more chill and shorter modeling video first.
Motchus #1492 Missing Missing Missing Missing Present Missing Missing Missing Misplaced Missing Missing Present Misplaced Missing Missing Missing Present Missing Misplaced Present Missing Present Missing Missing Present Present Present Missing Missing Present Article connexe # Modeling Luxo Jr. 15 February 2026·338 words·2 mins Blender 3D Motchus TV Modeling a Luxo lamp inspired by Pixar, using Bolt Factory and Extra Curve Objects extensions
Rigging and animation of the Luxo Jr. lamp, IK constraint management, composition, and lighting. In the tutorial, Andy’s room in Toy Story serves as the theme, a reference to Pixar, whose lamp is featured here as the emblem. I preferred to go for a mountain chalet atmosphere with a snowy exterior, so I had to add a window. I like it. This scene would later become the emblem of the animation studio.
After a week working on this video, I finished modeling the lamp and the basketball. I chose to differ slightly from the video by not using the suggested reference, opting instead for a Luxo model that is closer to the lamp used by Pixar.
Also, compared to the tutorial, I spent quite a bit of time creating holes in the parts, which wasn’t really necessary. In addition, the two extensions Bolt Factory and Extra Curve Objects are recommended for creating screws and springs, respectively, which are very useful for modeling this object.
As for TV series, I binge-watched a few.
